Turks Lose In Extras

06/09/2010 – Daily News Record

Bullpen Blows Lead in 7-3 Loss Written By Addison Webb Special Correspondant Daily News Record Harrisonburg – Through eight innings, it looked like the Harrisonburg Turks could bend but not break against Waynesboro. However, in the words of Coach Bob Wease, the Turks continued to look like an “eight-inning team.” The Generals tied the game in ninth inning before scoring four runs in the top of the 10th inning to beat Harrisonburg 703 in a Valley Baseball League game Tuesday. “I told them not to worry about it. We’ve got 40 games to go,” Turks manager Bob Wease said. “The only thing you can do is come out tomorrow and play as hard as you can again.” Turks pitcher Stephen Styck looked solid in the seventh and eighth innings, walking only one and allowing zero runs, but he struggled in the ninth. The right-hander from St. Joseph’s walked four batters and gave up three runs. “Just couldn’t find the strike zone,” Styck said. “It’s as simple as that. I mean (I) just didn’t close it out.” The Turks then allowed four runs in the 10th. The Generals scored off Harrisonburg pitchers James Weiner and Joseph Hollowell. In the innint, the Turks also struggled defensively. Catcher Brett Armour had a passed ball, and third baseman J.J. Loker dropped the ball while trying to make a routine throw to first. Harrisonburg had some close calls earlier in the game with starting pitcher Ryan Sorce. Sorce got out of two jams: one in the second and one in the fifth, but Sorce was able to hit the strike zone and strike out hitters when he needed to. The Turks got an early lead on a clutch RBI single by Loker, a Spotswood High School graduate, with two outs in the bottom of the second. Emilio Pagan cushioned that lead with a hit in the bottom of the sixth, which gave the Generals some defensive trouble, allowing Pagan a two-run inside-the-park home run. Despite the tough loss, both Styck and Wease had positive outlooks after the game. “I’m excited for the next game,” Styck said. “I can’t wait to go out there and prove myself that that was not a good outing and that doesn’t happen.
