Turks Squeeze Out High Scoring Win

06/18/2010 – Turks Tidbits

By Todd Jones James Madison University Intern New Market, VA – The Turks came into the night ready to wipe the slate clean following a loss to Haymarket on Thursday night. Not only did they wipe the slate clean, they also wiped the plate clean with 12 runs on the night. The Turks began the hitting spree with a base hit to 3rd base by Terrance Jackson (Okl. City). After Jackson stole 2nd base Connor Winn (Georgia Tech) hit an RBI double to right field sending Jackson home for the game’s first score. Two ground-outs later the Turks took the field. With Drew Granier (La. – Monroe) starting at pitcher the bottom of the 1st was quick as only four Rebels’ batters made it to the batter’s box.

Still holding their 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd Scott Dalrymple (Okl. City) hit a base hit into right field and JJ Loker (USC-Aiken) followed that with a base hit into center field. Cole Harrison (Florida)was then walked, loading the bases. Joe Huber (St. Josephs) then hit an RBI to right field that was caught, ushering home Dalrymple for the 2-0 lead. After a well hit bunt by Reuben Sosa (W. Okl.) the bases were loaded again, however a strike out and pop-out would retire the Turks bats. The bottom of the second inning showcased more Turks D as Granier struck out two and 1B Patrick Savage (Auburn)fielded a grounder for the out allowing the Turks to hold their 2-0 advantage. In the top of the 3rd Patrick Savage hit a double to the right field wall, and after two pop ups for outs and a walk for Dalrymple, Cole Harrison stepped to the plate. Cole proceeded to hit an RBI double to center field bringing in Savage for the run and a 3-0 lead. Dalrymple also tried to capitalize off the hit by Harrison, but was called out at the plate for the final out.

Granier began the bottom of the 3rd with a strikeout, however after three base hits and a walk the Rebels were able to make their first appearance on the scoreboard cutting the deficit to 3-1. After a pitch in the dirt got past Dalrymple at catcher, the Rebels’ Kenny Mickens was able to score bringing the Rebels to within one run of the Turks. The Turks would not allow any more runs this inning and would step up to the plate ready to do more damage. After two base hits by Joe Huber and Reuben Sosa the Rebels made a pitching change from starting pitcher Jared Winder to Brian Edelen. Afterward Connor Winn was walked- loading the bases, and off an errant throw past the catcher, Huber was able to score bringing the tally to 4-2. Patrick Savage then hit an RBI to CF that was caught at the wall, sending Sosa home, and Shaun Cooper (Arizona) hit an RBI single helping Connor Winn return home and pushing the score to 6-2. After a pop fly by Dalrymple was caught, Granier took to the mound once again. After a strikeout was followed by a base hit, a grounder to Granier would then be the Rebels 2nd out bringing Ryan Brown to the plate. Brown hit an RBI double to center field bringing in a run. Two base hits later the Rebels scored again, rallying back to 6-4. After another Granier strikeout the Turks dropped the mitts and grabbed the lumber. However a strikeout, pop up, and ground out in the top of the 5th had Harrisonburg quickly fielding again.

After a base hit in the bottom of the 5th, Granier would notch his seventh and final strikeout on the night. Following this strikeout a series of sloppy plays allowed New Market to score twice. After Joe Maloney hit what looked to be an RBI double into center field the throw from the outfield to Dalrymple at catcher was off allowing the run to score. However Dalrymple then rocketed an ill-advised throw to 3B trying to beat the runner. The throw sailed wide out of 3B JJ Loker’s reach allowing Maloney to turn the corner and get the score, tying the game at 6-6. After a ground-out, base hit and a walk Granier would be relieved by Emilio Pagan (Gardner-Webb) after 7 K’s and a strong 4 2/3 innings pitched. The Rebels weren’t done in the 5th just yet though. After another base hit brought in one more run giving the Rebels the lead, a pop fly was caught by left fielder Shaun Cooper for the third out.

In the top of the 6th Reuben Sosa led off with a base hit into center field followed by a long ball from Terrance Jackson caught at the wall in left field. After Connor Winn got another base hit on the night, Patrick Savage stepped up and hit an RBI single bringing home Sosa and tying the score again at 7-7. After Cooper was struck out and Winn was thrown out at home New Market would get another chance to break the tie. In the bottom of the 6th Pagan threw two strikeouts and a grounder was fielded by 2B Joe Huber who threw the runner out at first. So the Turks took to the dugout ready to grab the bats and swing away.

JJ Loker started off a hitting fest by dropping a double into left field. After Cole Harrison was thrown out at 1st Loker was able to advance to 3rd base and Joe Huber was then walked. Reuben Sosa’s hit to right field was then caught for the second out but the Turks refused to get back on defense any time soon. Terrance Jackson then hit an RBI single allowing Loker to score. After Connor Winn was walked loading the bases, Patrick Savage hit an RBI single to bring in Huber giving the Turks a 9-7 cushion. New Market then made a pitching change to Cameron Ward who would allow a double from Shaun Cooper, which scored two runs, followed by a base hit by Dalrymple, bringing in another run and building the Turks lead to 12-7. After a ground out for the third and final out New Market would strike back with some clutch hitting of their own. After a double was hit into center field and a walk was given up Emilio Pagan would be replaced by Zach Brewster (Georgia Tech) on the mound. Brewster had just arrived a few hours prior to game time from the long drive up from Georgia. The first batter he faced would be a strikeout, however two walks followed, bringing in a forced run. A pop fly to right field brought in the last run of the inning for the Rebels, making the score 12-9.

In the bottom of the 8th with the score still standing at 12-9 Brewster walked a batter and gave up a base hit, prompting the Turks to make another pitching switch to Stephen Styck (St. Josephs). After a base hit loaded the bases the next batter was walked bringing in another forced run. After striking out the next batter, a base hit brought in one more run for the Rebels leaving them one run shy of tying the game. 1B Patrick Savage then caught a pop fly in foul territory allowing the Turks to hold their slim lead at 12-11. The Turks were unable to capitalize on their lead after two strikeouts and a pop-out. So, with the game on the line and a possible defeat glaring them in the eyes the Turks showed their mettle and walled up their defense in the bottom of the 9th. The Turks fielded two grounders to beat the runners to 1st and Terrance Jackson made a catch in right field to shelter the victory.

The Turks return home tonight, July 18th to face the Rockbridge Rapids for Fan Appreciation Booster Night, game time is 730.
