Turks Win 9-4 in Weather Shortened Game

06/19/2010 – Turks Tidbits

Harrisonburg, VA – Mother Nature reared her ugly head Saturday night at Eagle Field as the Harrisonburg Turks defeated the Staunton Braves 9-4. The game was suspended for lightning in the bottom of the fifth with the Turks batting and was called an hour and a half later when the lightning did not let up.

The story of the night was Connor Winn of Georgia Tech. The hot-hitting shortstop went 4-4 with a double, four runs batted in and a stolen base. Winn had a two-RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth that scored Cole Harrison (Florida) and Joe Huber (St. Joseph’s, IN) after they both walked to lead off the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Winn had a two-RBI single to right that scored Harrison and Sosa ( Western Oklahoma ) before the game was suspended.

In the bottom of the third inning, Winn lead off with a single into left and later scored on a Patrick Savage (Auburn) RBI single to left center. Shaun Cooper (Pima C.C.) followed Savage with a two-run homer that was crushed to left field. In the bottom of the fourth, newly-arrived Turk Bobby Brown ( Arizona ) hit a double advancing Winn to third before Savage added his second RBI single of the night scoring Winn.

Terrance Jackson ( Oklahoma City ) started for the Turks, and though he was not as sharp as he was in a relief appearance against Winchester , he still pitched strong. Jackson ‘s only hiccup came in the top of the fourth inning when the Braves scored four runs on five hits. After that, Jackson settled down and was able to get out of the inning and then faced the minimum number of batters in the top of the fifth inning. In five innings pitched, Jackson allowed four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three Braves batters.

The Turks go on the road tomorrow Sunday June 20th to face Waynesboro at 7:00 p.m., so head out and support your Turks as they try to improve their record to 9-5. Harrisonburg returns home to play Front Royal on Wednesday June 24th at 7:30 p.m.
