Reading With the Turks a Hit

06/22/2010 – Turks Tidbits

By Brett Kucheruk, Turks Webcast Color Commentator The Harrisonburg Turks held their annual “Read with the Turks” event at the Massanutten Regional Library on Monday June 21st. Josh Band (Rollins), Scott Dalrymple (Oklahoma City), and Austin Erb (Ashland) of the Turks read books to 25 excited Harrisonburg children.

The Harrisonburg youth were front and center and very attentive as Austin started the event reading Curious George Plays Baseball and was followed by Scott who read Babe Ruth Saves Baseball. The biggest reaction came when Josh received some “ohh’s” with his enthusiastic reading of Pecorino Plays Baseball. All the children had fun at the event and thoroughly enjoyed the Turks players reading to them.

After the players finished reading, they fielded questions from the kids and parents in attendance, then signed autographs and handed out Harrisonburg Turks pencils. Overall, the event was a big success with the children enjoying the Turks players reading to them and being able to get their autographs. The Turks players had a good time reading to the children and stressed the importance of reading to the kids if they wanted to play sports in college.

The Turks have joined the crusade to promote the importance and fun in reading with the Massanutten Regional Library where children can win prizes for joining the “Make a Splash with your Library Summer Reading Game.” When a student reads 10 books, they will win a ticket to one Turks home game that admits them and their family. On Wednesday June 23rd join the Turks players for the Meet the Turks Lunch between 1:30-2:30 at Chick-fil-A, 1691 East Market Street, and eat lunch as well as get Turks autographs at the event.
