July Thanksgiving For the Braves

07/02/2010 – Turks Tidbits

By Todd Jones James Madison University Intern

Staunton, VA – S taunton hasn’t been a friendly place for the Turks this season. Within city limits the Braves have feasted on the Turks, acting as if John Moxie Stadium is the platter and the Turks are… well, you get the idea. The Braves have been inconsistent throughout the season but have now produced ‘tribal’ -sized rallies against the Turks at home twice. Harrisonburg hung tough through much of this one, but ultimately succumbed to a prolific Braves’ offense. Turks pitcher Kurt Wunderlich (Mich. St.)helped to keep the game scoreless until the bottom of the 4th inning when Steve Scoby scored for the Braves off a base hit RBI from Todd Brazeal. Tyler Carpenter(UTSA) made the final defensive play of the inning by throwing a perfect strike to 2nd base, beating out the runner who was attempting to steal. The top of the 5th started off with a bang as Shaun Cooper (Ariz.) blasted a home run which tied the game at one apiece. After a groundout from Terrance Jackson (Okl. City), JJ Loker (USC-Aiken) and Tyler Carpenter were walked putting runners on 1st and 2nd. However a strikeout and groundout followed and the bottom of the 5th ensued with both squads still tied. Despite two strikeouts in the bottom of the 5th the Braves managed to put two runs on the board and led the Turks 3-1 going into the 6th. After a pop out from Bobby Brown (Ariz.), Patrick Savage (Auburn) hit a single to center field which brought Cooper back to the plate. Cooper knocked another screamer over the wall, again equaling the Braves at 3 apiece. The score would hold at 3-3 until the bottom of the 7th when the flood gates opened up and all of Staunton’s farmlands were nourished with the Braves’ output. Staunton ran off nine unanswered runs in the 7th and 8th innings leaving the Turks a small glimmer of hope going into the top of the 9th down 3-12. That small glimmer of hope now turns into a small red ‘x’ on the calendar. The Braves visit JMU Veteran’s Memorial Stadium on July 13th and it’s highly likely the Turks already have the date marked. In the meantime, come out to the ballpark Saturday -July 3rd to cheer on your 1st place Turks against the Waynesboro Generals at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium, game time is 730.
