Playoff Primer

STAUNTON, Va. With the Valley Baseball League 2010 season coming to an end, the start of the play-offs is right around the corner.

August 3 is potentially the earliest the play-offs can begin with everything completed by the league’s August 15 deadline.

The top eight teams in the league, based on final regular season overall records, will qualify for the three-round play-offs. The quarter-final and semi-final rounds will be best-of-three, and the championship round best-of-five.

The top 4 seeds will host the opening round of the playoffs with the higher seed holding home field advantage in the semi-final and final rounds.

In the event of a tie in seeds two through seven, the head-to-head tie breaker will be used. If there is a tie for either the number one or number eight seeds, a one-game playoff will be used to break the tie.

Listed is the breakdown of how the first round of play-off matchups:

Seed 1 vs. Seed 8

Seed 2 vs. Seed 7

Seed 3 vs. Seed 6

Seed 4 vs. Seed 5

If regular season play were to end today, the teams would be placed in the following seeds:

No. 1 Haymarket 21-12

No. 2 Winchester 20-14

No. 3 Luray 19-14

No. 4 Waynesboro 17-16*

No. 5 Harrisonburg 17-16*

No. 6 Front Royal 17-17

No. 7 New Market 16-17

No. 8 Covington 16-18

*To date, Waynesboro has won two of three games against Harrisonburg so they were awarded the higher seed.
