06/03/2011 – Turks Tidbits
Written by Nathaniel Stoltz James Madison University Former Turk Kevin Fuqua and current Turk Pat Christensen (both righthanded pitchers) have earned honors for their outstanding play with the La Salle University baseball team. Fuqua, a 2010 Turks standout, took home the Big 5 Pitcher of the Year award after surpassing the 100-mark with an excellent 2.92 ERA. Fuqua was also La Salle’s Student Athlete of the Month in May after posting a 1.19 ERA in four starts. The righthander maintained an excellent 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio for the season, and the combination of that precision and his durability led to predictably excellent results. Fuqua is now the all-time La Salle leader in innings pitched (331), games started (46), and strikeouts (222). Christensen served as La Salle’s closer in 2011, tallying 13 saves, and he’s likely to slide into a similar important late-game role with the Turks this summer. Christensen struck out over a batter per inning (39 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings) and only allowed five earned runs all season (1.17 ERA). Even more impressively, he only walked five batters, for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 8-to-1! In recognition of his excellent performance throughout the season, the tall righthander was named to the All-Big 5 team. Congratulations to both players!
