Turks’ Streak Finished

After Six Straight Wins, Harrisonburg Falls To Rebels Written By Tim Chapman Special Correspondent, Daily News Record

NEW MARKET – One week ago, Max Kreuter was flying across the Atlantic Ocean after a 10-day vacation in Europe.

Sunday, the New Market Rebels’ pitcher made the 14-hour drive to the Shenandoah Valley from his hometown of Dunedin, Fla.

Four days later, he made yet another trip – his first to the mound this summer.

This outing was much shorter and the most comfortable as Kreuter led the Rebels to a 6-3 win over the Harrisonburg Turks on Thursday.

“Once I touched ground in America, I was just thinkin’ about a road trip,” Kreuter said. “… I feel great. I threw bullpen earlier in the week, I was ready to come in and Coach [Corey] Paluga said I was hot and ready to go.”

Kreuter, a rising senior at Flagler College, threw 3 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win – New Market’s first in six tries against the Turks this season.

The Rebels (13-10) snapped the Turks’ six-game win streak, but are still in second place in the Central Division of the Valley League behind Harrisonburg (18-6).

Kreuter was beaming after the game, happy to be playing again, but still reveling in his “experience of a lifetime.”

“I went to London; Heidelberg, Germany; and Paris,” he said. “Absolutely blew my mind.”

Paluga and Kreuter kept in close contact through e-mails during the first month of action. The coach was eager to play Kreuter, who suffered a torn labrum in early July last year that sent him home in his first stint with the Rebels.

“Max was with us last year, so we knew what he could do,” Paluga said. “… I told him during the spring that I was looking for another left-handed arm and that I’d love to have [him] back, there’d be a spot for [him] if it works out. Thankfully, it did work out.”

Mac Williamson (Wake Forest) led the Turks with two RBIs, thanks to a two-run homer in the third inning – his league-leading eighth of the season.

The home run came off New Market starter Chris Thomas, who was drilled in his right leg by a Dodson McPherson (Wingate) hit on the previous at bat.

Thomas fell to the mound for a few minutes before finishing the inning with two strikeouts, stranding two Turks. Harrisonburg managed just one more hit.

Five New Market players had RBIs, led by Tyler Gaby’s two.

Harrisonburg manager Bob Wease was disappointed in his team’s lack of energy.

“No life in the dugout, no life on the field tonight,” he said.
