Luray – On the night of his 19th birthday with his family sitting in the stands cheering him on, Catcher Blake Austin (Auburn U.) stepped up to the plate in the top of the eigth inning and launched a home run over the left field fence to drive in three more runs for the Turks. Austin’s birthday bomb would prove to be enough to put the Turks ahead of the Wranglers 6-5 for the win.
As Austin rounded third base Coach Wease gave him a pat on the back and said, “Happy Birthday”. The 19-year old catcher from Auburn University received “Happy Birthday” cheers from family and fans as he reached home plate.
The Turks had 11 hits in their victory over Central Division rivalry Luray, including three from leadoff hitter Jay Gonzalez and two by Brock Green. The Turks improved to 19-6; the Wranglers fell to 7-16.
The Turks return home for weekend games against the Front Royal Cardinals (15-10) on Saturday and the New Market Rebels (14-10) on Sunday. Game time at Veterans Memorial Park is 7:30 p.m.
