Thomas Smith has been with the Turks for less than a week, but wasted no time in contributing to the team and has earned Turks Player of the Week honors. Smith joined the team after helping his Georgia Tech team make it to the Super Regionals of the NCAA Tournament. In his first game with the Turks last Tuesday at Staunton, he broke out for 4-5 with a run in a close 7-6 victory. Since then he has started all five games, alternating between second and shortstop. With 22 at-bats, Smith is hitting .545 with a slugging percentage of .727. The upcoming sophomore from Georgia Tech hit his first homerun at Woodstock Saturday night, helping the team to a 7-2 win.
In addition to his offensive prowess, Smith has contributed solid infield defense, flashing a speedy intelligence, when faced with tough plays. Smith recorded 7 putouts, 21 assists, and 4 double plays turned in the six games that he has started for the Turks. Thomas Smith’s hot start has helped the Turks to close victories in the past week and will continue to be productive on both sides of the ball.
