Over the next few weeks we will be introducing the 2015 Harrisonburg Turks players. We will start by introducing the Wingate Bulldogs; outfielder Shane Billings and a returner from the 2014 Turks, Tyler Brown.
Shane Billings, sophomore, is an outfielder for the Wingate University Bulldogs. Billings may appear to be slightly undersized standing in a 5’11 and 180lbs, but he plays much bigger than that. During his freshman campaign, Billings started all 51 games and also earned the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Player of the Week in just his first week of collegiate baseball. Billings ended the season ranked 7th in all of the SAC and led the Bulldogs in run scored (45) and finished second in team batting average (.328). To kick of the 2015 season, Billings has torn the cover off the ball through the Bulldogs first 16 games batting an incredible .514 average along with 4 doubles, 3 home runs, and 18 RBIs.
Tyler Brown is a right handed pitcher from Suffolk, VA who now plays for the Wingate University Bulldogs. In 16 appearances in 2014, Brown went 2-2 with 3 saves. Over the 29 1/3 innings Brown pitched, he held opposing batters to a .206 batting average fanning 29 batters, and held on to a 2.76 ERA. So far in the 2015 season, Brown is already 3-1 with one save and is still keeping batters guessing with an opponent batting average of only .230. Last summer while playing for the Turks, in 16.0 innings of work Brown gave up only 10 hits, 5 runs, 1 earned run, 5 walks, and strike out 18 batters. The lefty had a 3-1 record with 2 saves and a 0.56 era.
