HARRISONBURG, Va., June 26, 2015 – The Turks earned a 1-0 victory over the Winchester Royals in a game that was called in the bottom of the fifth due to rain at Veterans Memorial Park on Friday night.

Ziemba slider 6-7Making his first start of the season, James Ziemba was the star of the show thanks to a five-inning outing in which he did not allow a hit. Despite the rain-shortened game, Ziemba’s performance still counts as a no-hitter, the first in the Valley Baseball League this season.

Because the away team successfully completed five innings, the game is official. With the win, the Turks move to 12-5 on the season while the Royals drop to 7-12.

A sacrifice fly by Jesse Baker scored Shane Billings in the first inning, accounting for the only run of the game. Billings doubled to right-center to lead off (the Turks sole hit) and moved to third on Tripp Shelton’s 4-3 groundout before racing home on a deep ball to center field.

Winchester starting pitcher Darrell Thompson was efficient, but was ultimately betrayed by Mother Nature. The lefty only allowed one run on one hit over four innings.

The only offense generated by the Royals came from walks by Spencer Levine and Luke Gibbs, but neither managed to advance beyond first base.

Weather permitting, Harrisonburg returns to action at 8 p.m. tomorrow night when they travel to Woodstock to take on the River Bandits.
