Trio of Spartans Will Be Turks

UNC-Greensboro will be well represented in Harrisonburg this summer. Returning Turk shortstop Tripp Shelton leads a talented trio off Head Coach (and former Turk) Link Jarrett’s ball club.

Shelton is a r2016 Tripp Sheltonangy 5′ 11″, 160 lb and had a solid freshman 2015 season as a Turk, batting .252, 1 HR and 15 RBI. His development is evident this season at UNCG as he has posted a .364 AVG, 3 HR and 15 RBI. Tripp has increased his contact and selectivity, boosting his on-Base % to .434. He is also 9 for 9 stealing bases.

A native of Winston-Salem, NC, Tripp is in the long line of quality Turks middle infielders including Major Leaguers Frank Menechino, David Eckstein, Cliff Pennington and other pros John Hardy, Bobby Spain, Ruben Sosa and Andy Perez.

Speedy and versatile outfielders Andrew Moritz and Ryne Sigmon will patrol the spacious green turf of Eagle Field.

Moritz, a Charlotte, NC native, is currently tending a foot injury but has posted a stellar Freshman season batting .400 with 11 2B, 7 3B, 1 HR, 33 RBI, 8-10 in steal2016 Andrew Moritzs, a gritty .454 OB % and a errorless season in the outfield. At 5′ 11″, 170 lbs, the future is bright to say the least.

A speedy, slashing left-hand hitter, Moritz has been on a steady climb. In 2015, he was instrumental in winning a State Championship at Providence High Scho ol and earned Second Team All-America honors by Louisville Slugger. He was selected to the 2015 Perfect Game All-Atlantic Region honorable mention list and the North Carolina All-State Team. He holds the single-season record of 46 hits last season and 61 stolen bases in 2013.

2016 Ryne Sigmon UNCG

Sigmon is also a lefty swinger with a little thump to his game. Ryne has played OF primarily and also DH making all 57 starts. He is hitting .324, 5 HR and 55 RBI, 11 doubles, 5 triples and a respectable 8-12 in stolen bases.

The Danville, VA native is a transfer from Danville CC after a stellar Freshman year there. A graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, Ryne is 6′ tall and weights 170 lbs.

The Spartans have had a very good season (37-20, 25-5 at home) particularly their potent lineup which sports a .344 team batting average and has 139 more runs scored than the opponents.

UNCG is currently in the Southern Conference tournament where they dropped their first game yesterday. Ryne Sigmon had two-hits and Shelton had one. Sigmon has shifted over to CF as Andrew Moritz is out. The Spartans play again today in an effort to keep their season going.

The Turks look forward to seeing our talented trio of Spartans as they continue to hone their skills as the “Boys of Summer”.
