Former Turk and Wingate Bulldogs Coach Jeff Gregory has sent two players to be Turks in 2016. Returning 2015 Valley League Most Valuable Player Shane Billings has had another terrific season.
Last season in Harrisonburg Billings hit .418 on 64 hits in just 39 games. Shane’s speed and athleticism made his transition to centerfield a natural fit. His .483 on-base % and 21 stolen bases allowed him to set the table for run scoring throughout the season.
Valley League MVP is an honor that draws national attention. Following it up with a first team All-American season and numerous other awards, further legitimizes Shane’s skill and potential.
Shane hit .444, 96 hits in just 52 games, a staggering .502 on-base % and 30-32 in stolen bases. In the field he had just one error.
Billings is slated to return and patrol CF for the Turks, but he will no doubt garner serious interest on draft day. Like former Bulldog and Turks CF Thomas Spitz, centerfield in Harrisonburg has been a gateway position for many pro players including Juan Pierre, Scott Cousins, Jeff Van Houten, Kennard Bibbs, Jay Gonzalez, Patrick Norris and Reggie Watson.
Young Wingate lefty Connor Clark will be pitching for the Turks. Clark pitched just a couple of innings this spring but the Freshman comes from highly-touted West Forsyth HS where current Turk SS Tripp Shelton and former Turks Brett Morgan and Josh Clark graduated. At 6′ 3″ and 180 lbs. Clark is a finesse lefty from Clemmons, NC.
Wingate is very solid Division II program and many Bulldogs have played well as Turks! Welcome back Bulldogs.
