CHARLOTTESVILLE–After two close shave wins at home, the Turks dropped a road game in Charlottesville 8-3 on Sunday night.

Jake Brace (Georgia Tech, Sophomore) pitched for the Turks and had his first poor outing of the year. The Turks defense had its worst game of the season adding fuel to Charlottesville rallies. A crucial error on a double play ball and a double just inches inside the first base bag plated two unearned runs for the Tom Sox in the 1st inning.

In the 2nd, a misjudged flyball dropped for a double, Zac Ching singled and another outfield error forced in run number 3. Patrick McColl then singled to score Ching. The Tom Sox staged a two-out rally in the 3rd with three straight hits to open a 6-0 lead through 3 innings.

Jake Hershman was on the mound for the Tom Sox and did not allow a hit in his 4 innings of work. Jared Weatherbee relieved him, and did not yield a hit until Elian Merejo (E. Florida) doubled to lead off the 7th. Cam Irvine plated him on an RBI single off of lefty Cody Maw. Maw pitched the final 4 innings for the save, racking up 8 strikeouts.

On the night, the Turks managed just 3 hits and struck out a season-high 15 times. The Turks yielded 13 hits and 8 runs to Charlottesville, just 4 of them earned due to 7 errors.

Alex Rodriguez (Florida State) and Jake Lane (Florida Tech) each pitched an inning for the Turks, allowing an insurance run each to the TOM Sox who are undefeated at home this season and haven’t lost at C’ville Weekly Ballpark since mid-July last season. That includes a spotless run through the playoffs last season.

The Turks fall to 7-5 and Charlottesville improves to 8-3. Harrisonburg plays at Staunton Monday making up a previous rainout. Just a game and a half out of 1st place in the bruising VBL Southern Division, the Turks will send Luke Scherzer (Virginia Tech, Senior)(1-0) to the hill. Chad Cooperman (1-1) will counter for Staunton. Game time is 7:30 at Gypsy Hill Park.
