Turks Come Up Short Against the River Bandits

Harrisonburg, VA- Last night the Harrisonburg Turks fought to get a win but couldn’t get the hit needed to bring runners home. The Woodstock River Bandits took the win, 4-3.

With six players down in North Carolina for the Showcase (Jed Bryant, Josh Madole, Cole McNamee, Alex Hoppe, Will Brian, and Eli Ellington) the Turks made the best of the players staying in Harrisonburg. Jacob Edwards of UNC Ashville started on the mound for the Turks and struck out four batters in his four innings and kept the River Bandits to one run. Branden Kunz of Pitt CC came in at the top of the fifth and struck out five batters in the remaining five innings.

The Turks had a slow start offensively but picked up steam in the bottom of the fifth. Left fielder RJ Schreck and third baseman Tom Caufield each hit a single early in the inning. Second baseman McCann Mellett hits a single to bring in Schreck, and first baseman Aaron Levy hits a single to bring in Caufield to tie the game up, 2-2.

The bottom of the seventh inning appeared promising for the Turks as they were now down by two, but it wasn’t enough to put them in the lead. Caufield and right fielder Austin Lynch each get on base from a free pass. Caufield is brought in by shortstop Nick Zona’s single, but the River Bandits’ catcher beats Lynch to home. Zona will be left on base with the Turks trailing 4-3.

The score finishes out at 4-3 with nine hits for the River Bandits and seven for the Turks. The Turks fall to 13-19 as they face the Covington Lumberjacks, 15-16, tonight in Covington.
