On the Mound

Garret Simpson (Eastern Kentucky) came on in relief to pitch two scoreless innings in EKU’s 9-5 victory over Jacksonville State on Saturday. Simpson was credited with the win as he struck out two and walked none while the Colonels’ offense gave him some much-needed run support, scoring eight runs in the first five innings.

Season stats: 5.20 ERA, 27.2 IP, 22/9 K/BB

Brett Whiteman

Brett Whiteman (Mercyhurst) got the start for the Lakers as he tossed four innings of two-run ball while scattering eight hits and striking out four in Mercyhurst’s 10-3 win over Indiana (PA). Only two of the eight hits allowed went for extra bases. With the win, Whiteman improved his record to 3-0 on the season, while the Lakers now own a 19-9 overall record.

Season stats: 3-0, 4.26 ERA, 19 IP, 18/10 K/BB

In the Batter’s Box

Caleb Bartolero (Troy) heated up at the plate, collecting six hits and six RBI in four games over the week. In Tuesday’s midweek contest at UAB, Bartolero hit a solo home run in the Trojan’s 12-4 win. His weekend was highlighted by a three-RBI performance in the series finale against Georgia State, as Bartolero recorded a double and crossed the plate twice in a 17-15 shootout loss.

Season stats: 31 GP/30 GS, .267 AVG, 3 HR, 23 RBI, .338 OBP

Fredric Walter (Oklahoma City) was unstoppable on Friday, as the senior went 2-for-3 with four RBI, a walk, and two runs scored in the first game of a doubleheader against Wayland Baptist. Walter notched an RBI double in the first inning, and followed that up with a three-run homer to center field as Oklahoma City won 12-3 en route to a series sweep.

Season stats: 38 GP/38 GS, .317 AVG, 7 HR, 34 RBI, .592 SLG

Conor Hartigan

Conor Hartigan (James Madison) saw no rust after the Dukes’ 12-day layoff, hitting 5-for-13 with five RBI in a weekend series at Charleston. In Friday’s contest, Hartigan mashed a two-run homer, and also went deep in the first inning of Sunday’s game. He chipped in another RBI single in the eighth as JMU took down Charleston 7-1 to salvage one game in the series.
