John Breeden
Harrisonburg, VA
In their second seventh-inning victory of the season, the Harrisonburg Turks defeated the Covington Lumberjacks 13-1 Saturday at Casey field. The win moves them to 7-5 this season and 4-2 on the road.
The Turks wasted no time getting ahead in the top of the first by scoring four runs. Center fielder Sam Schner (Wingate) scored on an RBI from shortstop Seaver King (Wingate). Designated hitter Mitch Farris scored the second run on a Lumberjacks catcher error. Right fielder Bradley Bott (UNCG) drove in a two-run RBI single to give the Turks a 4-0 lead.
Harrisonburg had another four-run inning in the top of the second as left fielder Jaylon Lee (EMU) drove in a two-run RBI single. First baseman Christian Ficca (Georgetown U) scored on a passed ball and Lee scored off a single from second baseman Brenden Vern (College Central FL).
The Turks topped their first two innings in the top of the fifth with a five-run inning. Schner drove in two runs on a single and he and Farris later scored on a two-run RBI double from King. King later scored off a single from Lee to give Harrisonburg a 13-0 lead.
The Lumberjacks loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and Bradke Lohry (WabashValley JC) walked to force a run, but they couldn’t rally enough in time as the Turks took a 13-1 win — their largest margin of victory this season.
The Turks are now 2-1 against the Lumberjacks this season after losing to them at home 3-2 on June 6 and defeating them on the road 8-7 in extra innings on June 11.
