John Breeden
Harrisonburg, VA
Harrisonburg’s seven-game winning streak came to a halt Tuesday night as the Turks were defeated by the Staunton Braves 7-4 at John Moxie Stadium. The loss drops them to 18-11 this season and 8-5 on the road.
Mitch Farris (Wingate) got the Turks on the board in the top of the first by getting Sam Schner (Florida Tech) in to score on an RBI putout.
The Braves kept them honest in the bottom of the first as Andrew Bennett (Samford) hit an RBI single to tie the game at one.
Seaver King (Wingate) notched his second home run of the season, launching a solo shot in the top of the third. Mike Rosario (Miami) also scored in this inning on an unearned run following a Braves fielding error.
Joe Delossantos (William & Mary) scored off an RBI single from David Pereira (Central Florida) in the bottom of the third to make it a one-run game.
Staunton began to take charge in the bottom of the sixth as Will Carlone (VCU) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. The Braves took their first lead of the game after Grant Painter (James Madison) scored unearned following a Turks fielding error.
The Turks snagged a run in the top of the seventh when T.J. Williams (Notre Dame) walked with the bases loaded, forcing King home.
Despite tying the game in the seventh, Harrisonburg would allow Staunton to score three more runs between the bottom halves of the seventh and eighth — giving the Braves the 7-4 victory.
Jake Delisi (North Carolina A&T) took his first loss of the season after pitching 2.2 innings and throwing two strikeouts. Matt Kleinfelter (James Madison) started on the mound for the Turks and threw six strikeouts after pitching 5.1 innings.
Next up for the Turks is a trip to Covington to face the Lumberjacks Wednesday at 7 p.m.
