The Turks Lose on the Road in Charlottesville

Charlottesville, Va. – The Harrisonburg Turks had an early lead over the Charlottesville Tom Sox, but the home team came back to get the 6-5 victory.

The Tom Sox scored in the bottom of the first inning. Kirby McMullen scored first off a wild pitch.

In the top of the third inning, RJ Schreck, the Turks’ right fielder, blasted a home run and scored both McCann Mellett and Travis Reifsnider.

Travis Reifsnider hit a double to left field and Aaron Levy and Immanuel Wilder scored putting the Turks ahead 5-1 in the top of the fourth.

The Tom Sox then responded in the bottom of the fourth. After an error by the Turks, Dan Hardwood and Cal Greenfield scored for the Tom Sox. Christian Hlinka then scored another unearned run for Charlottesville.

Gregory Ryan then stepped up and hit a home run to tie the game for the Tom Sox.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tom Sox scored the go-ahead run. Kirby McMullen scored again off a sacrifice fly to center field from Trey McDyre.

Eli Ellington subbed in for starting pitcher Alex Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth. Rodriguez got the loss on the night pitching five innings, throwing for seven hits, six runs, one earned run, one walk and three strikeouts. Rodriguez ended the night with a 7.53 ERA.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Alex Hoppe came in for Eli Ellington. Ellington only pitched in one inning, allowing one hit and one strikeout. He received a 1.06 ERA.

Alex Hoppe pitched in two innings and got a 1.80 ERA. He only gave up one hit, one walk and threw four strikeouts.

In the top of the ninth, Jed Bryant was then putout to seal the victory for the Charlottesville Tom Sox.

The Turks (11-10) will play the Strasburg Express (15-5) on Sunday for the first time this season. The Express have the highest winning percentage in the Valley League at 0.750 and are on an eight-game winning streak.

The teams will play a doubleheader at JMU Veterans Memorial Park, the first game starting at 6:00 p.m.
