Three TURKS were recognized for their outstanding performances during the 2002 season. Outfielder Brent Matheny (James Madison U.), Starting Pitcher E.J. Shanks (Oklahoma City U.), and Relief Pitcher Logan Kensing (Texas A&M) were named to the All Valley Team by the media. Brent Matheny impressed the fans with his ability to play anywhere on the field that he was needed, which even included a pitching appearance. His stats were a leader in numerous VBL categories. He won the TURKS MVP award and Batting Title and represented the TURKS on the VBL All Star Team. E.J. Shanks kept his opponents off balance all season with his brilliant pitching performances. He had a 1.30 era and a 4-1 record befor e injuring his ankle the last week and a half of the season. E.J. had a league high 17 strikeouts in a game against Waynesboro. Given the name, "Big City" by Coach Wease, Shanks always gave a Big Effort every time on the hill. He also made the VBL All Star Team. Logan Kensing was a thrill to watch as he shut the door on his opponents as the closer for the TURKS. His 2-1 record doesn’t tell the whole story for the job he did for the team. He led the league with 9 saves. He won the TURKS MVP Pitcher and was on the VBL All Star Team.
