Turks Shutout Staunton in Season Opener

The Harrisonburg TURKS (1-0) posted their first W in the Win Column of their 2004 season against the Staunton Braves (1-1) on Sunday, at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The TURKS defeated the Braves 5-0, led by James Madison University Junior, Greg Nesbitt (1-0). Nesbitt went seven innings for the TURKS, giving up four hits, no runs, with no walks, and striking out six. Tim Gudex, a Sophomore from the University of Iowa, came in relief in the seventh inning, giving up no hits and striking out one, keeping the Braves scoreless and securing the TURKS first shutout of the 2004 season. TURKS first baseman, Mitchell Moses, a Sophomore at James Madison University, displayed the first hit of the 2004 season in the second inning by doubling to left field. The TURKS tallied up nine hits against the Braves. The offense was led by TURKS left fielder, Junior, Jeff Halbert (Rollins College)who went 2-4 with a double and a single. Halbert, also led the way defensively, making a diving catch in left field in the ninth inning to prevent a Braves rally and converted on two assists at second from left field. The TURKS next game is scheduled for Tuesday, June 8th at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 7:30 against the Covington Lumberjacks.
