The TURKS (5-1) dugout cleared as players ran out to congratulate DH, Matt Weglarz (Sophomore, SW Missouri State) his game winning single in the bottom of the ninth to score Reggie Watson (Junior, Indiana University) and lift the TURKS to a 4-3 win over the Front Royal Cardinals (3-3 Sunday, June 13, at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Harrisonburg. While Weglarz supplied the winning run, the TURKS as a team posted 12 hits, with seven of their 10 batters having at least one hit. James Madison University’s sophomore catcher, Matt Sluder, led the way for the TURKS offense going 3-4. Third baseman, Corby Heckman, (Junior, Indiana University) added to the hitting spree going 2-4 with an RBI, while James Madison University’s first baseman, Mitchell Moses (Sophomore), contributed two hits in four at bats. Oklahoma State Junior, Damian salcedo, made his first start for the TURKS, going five complete innings, giving up three runs, off seven hits, striking out five, and walking three. Salcedo was relieved by Freshman, Pat Caldwell, from Yavapai Junior college in the sixth, who went three complete innings for the TURKS, giving up zero runs, on one hit, striking one, and walking one. Scott Brune (Freshman, Iowa University) was called to the mound to start the ninth inning, giving up zero runs, on one hit, striking out one, and walking none. Brune was credited with the win after the TURKS went on to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. The TURKS are now 5-1, and leading the Southern Division. The next game will be tomorrow, June 14th at John Moxie Stadium in Staunton, against the Staunton Braves, and then back at home on Tuesday, June 15th against the leader of the Northern Division, the Luray Wranglers (5- ). Both games will start at 7:30 p.m.
