Staff Report Staunton News Leader WAYNESBORO — Harrisonburg wasted little time putting Waynesboro in a big hole Tuesday night during their Valley Baseball League matchup. The Turks scored five times during the top of the first inning and rolled to a 10-0 victory over the Generals. The loss secured Waynesboro a fifth-place finish in the South Division, eliminating the 12-30 Generals from the playoffs. Lucas Delong ripped a two-run single as part of the Turks’ five-run first, then Kacy Bruce pounded a two-run double during a three-run Turks third. Despite the big victory, there was bad news for second-place Harrisonburg. Covington (26-15) clinched the South Division title with a 5-2 victory over Woodstock. Harrisonburg (25-19) wrapped up second place when third-place Staunton (21-20) lost. Waynesboro’s Ryan Cunningham, who plays at Rhode Island, continued his hot hitting Tuesday with a 3-for-4 night. He’s hitting .354 and is chasing Covington’s Tom Hagan for the Valley hitting title. Hagan entered Tuesday’s game hitting .358. Waynesboro hosts Haymarket tonight, then completes its season Friday by hosting Staunton. Ochs, Dawson (3), Wheeler (8) and Denker, Martinez (4). Moffitt, Tencleve (1), Reynoso (7) and Hutchins.
