Bocock, Ostlund Making Headway

3/01/2007 – Daily News Record

A.M.Chatter Written by Dustin Dopirak According to the Baseball America Prospect Handbook, a pair of Turner Ashby High School graduates are making waves with their respective major-league Baseball organizations. Former TA shortstop Brian Bocock is listed as the No. 26 overall prospect in the San Francisco Giants’ system. Bocock, taken from Stetson University in the ninth round of last season’s draft, is also said to be the third-best shortstop in the Giants’ farm system. The Handbook also says he has the best infield arm among San Francisco prospects. Left-handed pitcher Ian Ostlund, also a TA grad, is the fifth-rated left-handed reliever in the Detroit Tigers’ farm system. Bocock and Ostlund are two of 52 former Valley League players listed in the Baseball America handbook. Also among them are several former Harrisonburg TURKS. Former TURKS shortstop Cliff Pennington is rated No. 13 overall in the Oakland A’s farm system and second among shortstops. Right-handed reliever Rocky Cherry is ranked 16th overall among Chicago Cubs farmhands, and right fielder Ben Harrison is the No. 17 prospect in the Texas Rangers system. Former TURKS Kennard Bibbs (Milwaukee outfielder), Eric Haberer (St. Louis left-handed starter), Scott Cousins (Florida right fielder), Michael Cooper (Chicago Cubs right-handed reliever), Coby Mavroulis (Washington left-handed reliever), Tyler Norrick (St. Louis left-handed starter) and Brett Smith (New York Yankees right-handed starter) are also ranked at their respective positions.
