6/08/2007 – Turks Tidbits
Written By Jessica Merrill James Madison U. Sports Management Intern Harrisonburg, Va., June 07, 2007 – After slaughtering the Woodstock Bandits on Wednesday night by a score of 19-2 the Turks continued their winning streak tonight topping the Covington Lumberjacks 5-1. The Turks had out-hit their opponents 35-10 up until tonight when they added another 12 hits to that total. Tonight’s first inning between the Turks and Lumberjacks was a quiet one, however the Lumberjacks broke the silence in the top of the second when right fielder Kevin Thulin (Owasso, Oklahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Kentucky) reached first of a fielding error by Turks’ third baseman Brett Stewart (Niceville, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Appalachian State) and then advanced to second. Thulin would advance to third on a groundout by designated hitter Kevin Bishop (Marietta, Gahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Kentucky) and then score right after on a groundout by first baseman Adam Doleac (Hattiesburg, Misshttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Southern Mississippi). No one would score again until the bottom of the six when the Turks would brake out their bats to top the Lumberjacks 4-1. The top of the second would be the last time that the Lumberjacks scored. Centerfielder Patrick Norris (Pensacola, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Oklahoma City) would hit the bases first for the Turks on a throwing error by Covington shortstop Manuel Arrojo (Miami, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Florida International) and then advance to second. Norris would then score on a double hit by second baseman B.J. Wheeler (Abilene, Texas/Clarendon). Shortstop Bobby Spain (Chandler, Arizhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Oklahoma City) would come to the plate next hitting a two-run homer that would score Wheeler and put the Turks ahead 3-1. After a quick pitching change catcher Andrew Franco (Destin, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Appalachian State) would start things off again for the Turks with a single up the middle. Designated hitter Mike Pericht (Orland Park, Illhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Saint Joseph) would follow with another single and would advance to second on an error by the Covington center fielder Eric Workman (Clay, W.Vahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/West Virginia State). Pericht would be tagged out trying for third, but Franco would score in the process giving the Turks a 4-1 lead. The Turks would score yet again in the bottom of the seventh beginning with a single by left fielder Jon Moore (Mokena, Illhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Purdue). Moore would advance to second on a baulk by Covington pitcher Brian Santana (Plantation, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Florida International) and score after a single hit by Wheeler. Pitcher David Klumpp (Waco, Texas/Arkansas-Little Rock) would get his first win as a Turk going seven complete innings giving up just two hits while striking out six and walking two. The Turks will be back in action at home today hosting the Winchester Royals.
