New Market Takes Down the Turks

6/15/2007 – Turks Tidbits

Written by Jessica Merrill Sports Management Intern James Madison University Harrisonburg, Va., June 15, 2007 – It was lights out for Harrisonburg tonight as the New Market Rebels came into town to steal a 6-4 win out from under the Turks. The Rebels starting pitcher Daniel Malone (Blue Springs, Mo/Northwest Missouri) was credited with tonight’s win limiting the Turks to just 5 hits. The Rebels started things off in the top of the first inning when second baseman Dale Brannon walked, then catcher Nick Stanley (Largo, Fla/So Florida C.C.) singled to third base to advance Brannon to second. First baseman Nolan Brannon soon followed with a single through the right side, advancing then to second on an error by Turk’s right fielder Sammy Lee (Ninnekah, Okla/Redlands C.C.) that would in turn score Brannon. It was much of the same story for the rest of the night for the Turks as the Rebels continually battered hits off their pitching staff. The Rebels went on to score another run in the third then, in the bottom of the fourth the Turks threatened beginning with a walk by catcher Mike Pericht (Orland Park, Ill/Saint Joseph). After advancing to second on a wild pitch from Malone, Pericht scored on a single hit into center field by shortstop Ryan Wood (Woodbridge, Va/East Carolina). The Rebels in turn answered scoring one run in the top of the fifth, seventh, eighth, and ninth. During the bottom of the ninth after changing pitchers in the bottom of the eighth the Rebels changed things up once again this time giving pitcher Benjamin Dollar (Gaffney, S.Chttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Presbyterian) a shot at the Turks. Harrisonburg answered the pitching changed by scoring three runs off of just one hit, coming just short of yet another win. Second baseman Travis Peep was the first to reach base due to an error on the Rebel’s shortstop Eric Kallstrom (S.W. Ranches, Fla/Central Florida). Centerfielder Jon Moore (Mokena,ILL/Purdue) would then follow with a walk advancing Peep to second base, followed by another walk drawn by left fielder B.J. Wheeler (Abilene, Texas/Clarendon) that would advance both Peep and Moore to third and second respectively. First baseman David Dennis (El Cajon, Calif/Oklahoma City) then singled into left field advancing Wheeler to second and scoring both Peep and Moore. Third baseman Brett Stewart then followed by drawing yet another walk, advancing Dennis to second and Wheeler to third. Pericht reached first on a fielders choice, scoring Wheeler and advancing Stewart to second and Dennis to third. Wood would then reach on yet another fielder’s choice, advancing Pericht to second, but Stewart would be out on the force at third by the third baseman unassisted to end any chance for the Turks. The Turks will be back in action today on the road against Front Royal at 7:30.
