Generals Skipper Gets a New Gig

Written By Corine Gatti Waynesboro Generals Coach Lawrence Nesselrodt has been hired as the new head baseball coach of West Virginia University Tech. The Golden Bears are a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Nesselrodt left his assistant coaching position at West Virginia State after seven years. “I found out in the final week of the Valley League season that they were interested in me,” Nesselrodt said. “They talked it over with me and that was that.” Golden Bears coach Tim Epling resigned after the 2007-08 season, opening the door. “When I heard that they needed someone right away and Athletic Director Kenny Howell [WVUT] knew about me coaching in Waynesboro,” Nesselrodt said, “it seemed to be a good decision for both of us. I have already started practice on Monday. It feels good to become a head coach in college again. I love working with the kids.” Nesselrodt was 23 when he started as a head coach at Garrett College in Maryland, where he coached for nine seasons. “I am so happy about this opportunity,” Nesselrodt said. Many in the area know the skipper from his stint coaching the Generals for the last three seasons. “I am planning to stay part of the Generals. Right now, I am planning to come back as a coach, but that could change,” Nesselrodt said. “I will continue to help them recruit. It’s because of coaching here that I was given this chance. I will always be a General.” Nesselrodt compiled an 87-42-1 record with the Generals during his tenure. “No matter what happens, I will help this organization [Generals],” Nesselrodt said.
