1/16/2009 – Turks Tidbits
The 2009 season promises many changes for the Turks and their fans. Written by Emily Sousa James Madison University Sports Management Intern At the completion of the Turks 2008 season James Madison University began the demolition of the Turks historical home, Veterans Memorial Stadium, to make way for their brand new baseball facility. JMU will keep the cherished name sake out of respect for its history in the community. The new complex is scheduled to be completed for the Dukes 2010 spring season and the Turks summer season. JMU graciously invited the Turks to use their own Long Field Stadium for the 2009 season, which is located on the JMU main campus. Long Field Stadium abuts more than adequate parking for the Turks fans. However, there is a catch; Long Field is not equipped with lights. So the normal 7:30 start time will be changing for the Turks home games this year to 5:00. This being said, the Turks hope that the earlier start time will entice more families to come out and enjoy the games. There will be an increase in weekend home games this season, thanks to the understanding of the Valley Baseball League. The admission for the 2009 season will remain the same: Adults $5.00 Seniors $2.00 Children under 12 $1.00 The Valley Baseball League All Star game will be played on Sunday, July 12th and will be hosted by the Woodstock River Bandits at their Central High School Baseball Complex. The Valley Baseball League All Stars will play the Cal Ripken League All Stars at Waldorf, MD On Wed. July 15th. The Turks would like to extend a warm welcome to the newest Valley League team, the Rockbridge Rapids. The Rapids will be playing their home games at Washington & Lee’s newly-lighted Captain Dick Smith Field in Lexington. Now that there are twelve teams in the league, it was decided over the off season that the teams would be split up into three divisions; Northern, Central, and Southern. This will help cut back on travel expenses and hopefully create some interesting rivalries within the divisions. The divisions are broken down geographically as follows: NORTHERN DIVISION Fauquier Gators Front Royal Cardinals Haymarket Senators Winchester Royals CENTRAL DIVISION Harrisonburg Turks Luray Wranglers New Market Rebels Woodstock River Bandits SOUTHERN DIVISION Covington Lumberjacks Rockbridge Rapids Staunton Braves Waynesboro Generals The Turks are seeking Host Families to place players with this summer. If your family has an extra bedroom and would like to invite a player to be your special guest this summer from June 1st through August 10th, please contact Bob and Teresa Wease at Wease Auto Exchange by calling 434-5919. Players should have access to the bathroom, laundry room and kitchen. The Turks organization provides each player with one meal ticket a day at various local restaurants.
