Turks Down Front Royal, 5-3

07/26/2009 – Turks Tidbits

Written by Matthew Vanover James Madison University Intern After the Turks lost three straight, they have responded with back to back wins as they beat Front Royal 5-3. Drew Granier (Thibodaux, Lahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Miss. Gulf Coast) got the start for the Turks and gave a solid performance. Granier pitched six and two thirds giving up two runs on six hits. Granier located his pitches well giving up just two walks while striking out four. Granier moves to 2-0 on the season while the Turks improve to 8-7 on the season. Ryan Eden (Slidell, Lahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Univ. of New Orleans) got the Turks going in the bottom of the first with an infield single. Eden stole second on the very next pitch. Eden went on to score as the Turks put up two runs in the bottom of the first. “Coach Wease has been giving me the green light to steal lately. It has worked out so far since I haven’t been getting thrown out,” Eden said. The Turks stole three bases as they were aggressive on the base paths. Eden, while going one for three with a walk, was business as usual in center field. Eden had six putouts, and one trademark catch. In the top of the first, Eden was playing slightly shallow when a ball was hit to deep center. Eden, who believes he covers a lot of ground running backwards, made a run saving catch. “I like to play a little shallow and take away a lot of the blooper type hits. With the wooden bats, it is a lot harder to get one over my head,” Eden said. With the score 3-1 going to the bottom of the fifth, the Turks put up two insurance runs which was the difference in the game. Bobby Brown (San Diego, Califhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Arizona) led the inning off with a double to right center. Two battters later Mike Schwartz (Tampa, Flahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Tampa) tripled to left center to score Brown. A sacrifice fly by Nathan Weglarz (Homewood, Illhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/St. Joseph’s) would score Schwartz from third. Ed Wakefield (Larkspur, Califhttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Portland) took the mound for middle relief in the top of the seventh. Wakefield pitched an inning and a third giving up one run on two hits. Brad Riddle (Bethany, Oklahttps://harrisonburgturks.com/NewsManager/Oklahoma City) came in to pitch in the top of the ninth. He earned the save as he dominated the last inninng not allowing any of the Front Royal hitters to reach base. The Turks are back in action tomorrow night at 5 p.m. as they will host Waynesboro.
