The Turks have been nagged by injuries of late and when injuries happen it provides great opportunities for players to step into new roles and step up.
Lately, Thomas Smith (Georgia Teach) has been moved into the leadoff spot to give teammate Thomas Spitz (Wingate) some much needed rest. Smith has stepped right in as a great table setter for the Turks in the past few games but his recent success in the leadoff spot may be attributed to the offensive momentum he created for himself last week.
For his recent offensive output, Smith has been named Turks POW for July 7-13. During that week, mainly in the middle of the lineup, Smith went a solid 10-for-22 (.455) with seven singles and three doubles to go with only two strikeouts including a 4-for-4 night on July 13 against the Strasburg Express. Smith bumped his season average at weeks end from high-.200s to .318.
Smith who has been a utility infielder for the Turks was also a member of this year’s Valley Baseball League South All-Star team.
Congrats to the Ramblin’ Wreck’s Thomas Smith on his great production on the diamond!
