WAYNESBORO, Va., June 14, 2015 – Matt Hartman allowed only two hits over 6 scoreless innings and the offense provided plenty of run support as the Turks defeated the Generals 7-2 at Kate Collins Field in Waynesboro on Sunday night.

With the wMatt Hartman 2015 win against Waynesboroin, the Turks rise to 6-3 on the year and stay in second place in the South division while dropping Waynesboro to 4-4.

Matt Hartman Arizona win against WaynesboroThe Turks’ offense put up seven runs for the second consecutive night and tallied double-digit hits for the fifth time in nine games on the year. Tyler Straub announced his presence loud and clear, hitting three doubles and scoring two runs in a 3-for-5 performance. Shane Billings (one RBI), Jared Baker (two RBIs) and Kameron Esthay (one RBI) each finished with two hits and a run scored.

Connor Foltyn took the mound for the Generals, but struggled through three innings. With his defense committing two errors in a four-run 2nd inning, only two of his five runs allowed were earned.

Waynesboro’s offense got a respectable seven hits off of Turks pitching but never truly threatened to score until the ninth inning. Imani Willis and Kevin Phillips led the team with two hits and a run batted in each.

After a scoreless first, the Turks broke through in the second for four runs. After a double by Straub and a single by Esthay, a grounder by J.J. Bissell to Waynesboro 2nd baseman was mishandled and Straub scored giving the Turks their first run. Then two batters later, Shane Billings crushed a triple to the fence scoring Esthay and Bissell extending the lead to 3-0. The final run of the innings would come on a throwing error by the General’s third baseman on a grounder by Tripp Shelton.

In a “that’s something you don’t see everyday” moment in the 3rd, Jared Baker and Kameron Esthay roped back-to-back triples to score one more and extend the lead to 5-0.

The Turks had their final offensive outbreak in the 5th inning. Joe Lytle slapped a leadoff single to center and was moved to third by a Tyler Straub double two batters later. Baker would go on to knock both Lytle and Straub in with a single, bringing the Turks to their final run total of seven.

The Generals finally got on the board in the bottom of the ninth with a single, walk and single to lead off the inning. A single by Willis would score Kevin Fagan to bring the Generals within 5. James Ziemba would close the door with a strikeout of Ryan Coale, Ziemba’s third K of the inning, to secure the Turks win.

The Turks return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Staunton following an off day tomorrow.
