Momentum continued to roll for the Turks on Wednesday as they beat the Charlottesville TomSox 10-1 for their fourth win in a row. The Turks (5-4) have broken above .500 for the first time this season.
“It feels great,” left fielder Chris Katz said. “I know we didn’t play our best baseball early on, but the guys we have here are super talented and we enjoy playing together.”
Harrisonburg continued its hot hitting early, putting up four runs in the first inning. Katz singled to right field to bring designated hitter Cam Nelson home from second base. Katz then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by catcher Matt Delgado. With the bases loaded, third baseman Brett Wehringer lashed a line drive single to right to bring in two more runs. Katz finished the day with three hits and four RBI, but was quick to disperse the credit.
“It’s not really anything that I did,” Katz said. “It’s more of a testament to the guys getting on base in front of me. They put me in a position where if I do my job, they’ll score.”
For the second consecutive game, the Turks pitching staff collected double-digit strikeouts. Starting pitcher Carson Morton made his third start of the season, pitching four innings, allowing one run with three strikeouts. Morton is currently the Turks strikeout leader with 14 on the season. Hudson Lee came on in relief and threw another four innings with seven strikeouts of his own.
“I was able to find my two-seam [fastball] and work off that with my slider,” Lee said. “I got to throw my changeup a little bit tonight, so they were tunneling together pretty well.”
Following a shaky start to the season, the Turks have been working toward playing as a cohesive unit. They are confident that the chemistry they are forming will help them maintain their winning ways throughout the season.
“I knew we had the guys to [win],” Lee said. “We have some really good bats, some really good arms, and everything’s starting to come together.”
Following the two-game homestand, the Turks will be on the road for two games. They travel to Waynesboro tonight to face the Generals at 7 p.m., and will visit the Covington Lumberjacks tomorrow, also at 7 p.m.
