Harrisonburg got back in the win column on Saturday, holding off the Waynesboro Generals 11-8 in their first win since a 7-4 result over the Culpeper Cavaliers on June 15th. The win ends a four-game losing skid and gets the Turks back to a winning record at 9-8.

“Maybe we’ll go on a 7-game winning streak now,” head coach Bob Wease joked. “We lost four, then won seven in a row, then lost four again, and now we’ve won one.”

The Turks’ offense struck early, pushing across two runs in the first inning and three in the second. Left fielder Chris Katz opened the scoring by hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring designated hitter Jacob Green, followed by third baseman Jack Cannizzaro singling to right to bring in second baseman Cam Harris. Katz was one of five Turks who drove in two runs, while Green and Harris each scored three times. Katz leads the Turks with 19 RBI so far this season.

“[We were] seeing it well today,” Harris said. “[I was] putting good passes on it and just trying to have a flat, level swing.”

The Turks Have been prone to giving up big innings recently, allowing five or more runs in a single inning in three of their previous four games. Waynesboro just missed adding to that number, scoring four runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at five. The Generals collected three hits, two walks and a hit batter in the inning, culminating in a 2-run single to center field from catcher Kyle Cincinnati.

Despite the setback, Harrisonburg struck again for three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Shortstop Jose Perez scored in the sixth on Green’s second single, then drove in a run himself with a single to right. Perez leads the Turks with a .400 batting average in 15 at bats since joining the team.

“The attitude was great today,” Wease said. “All the guys were in the game, patting each other on the back, just pulling for everybody. It was a good atmosphere.”\

The Turks will try to build another winning streak as they host the Culpeper Cavaliers this evening. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
