Turks bats get late life to slip past Charlottesville 3-1

A fast-paced pitching duel ensued on Thursday as the Turks (18-9) snuck past the Charlottesville TomSox in 10 innings. The win brings Harrisonburg’s winning streak to five games and places them one game back of Charlottesville (20-9) in the South Division standings.

Turks starting pitcher David Davila made his second start of the summer, throwing five innings and allowing one run in the second inning. However, Charlottesville starter James Hays met Davila’s performance with a gem of his own, throwing six scoreless innings allowing three hits.

The Turks broke through in the seventh inning, tying the game when right fielder Anthony Paskell scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from designated hitter Cam Nelson. The score was Paskell’s 20th of the summer, the third-highest mark on the Turks. Third baseman Allex Ulloa was thrown out at third, however, creating an inning-ending double play.

Harrisonburg nearly opened a lead in the eighth inning, loading the bases with no outs with the help of three Charlottesville errors. A tagout at home on a sacrifice bunt and two consecutive strikeouts put an end to the Turks’ chances.

A scoreless ninth inning sent the game to extra innings, where the Turks wasted no time putting together some long-awaited offense. With pinch runner Brett Wehringer starting the inning on second base, center fielder Cooper Prince drove him in with a line drive to right field. Prince then scored on the next play when shortstop Jose Perez doubled to the same spot. With the lead secured, Turks pitcher Chad Harvey forced three straight flyouts to seal the win.

Harrisonburg’s string of daily games continues tonight when the Turks visit the Waynesboro Generals, looking to gain yet more ground in the division race. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
