Turks Fade Fast

Big Start Wasted In Harrisonburg Loss Daily News Record Written by Scott McAvoy Special Correspondent A three-run first inning gave the Turks a spark, but the fire quickly went out. Second baseman Josh Richardson (Indiana) first baseman Clint Robinson (Troy) and left fielder Lucas Delong (San Francisco) each scored in the first inning, but Harrisonburg managed just one run after that, falling 11-4 to Haymarket in a Valley League baseball game Tuesday at Memorial Stadium. While Harrisonburg’s offense sputtered after the first inning, Harmarket was just getting started, pounding out 12 hits en route to its highest run total of the season. The Turks didn’t have an answer. "Our bats just weren’t there tonight," Harrisonburg manger Bob Wease said after his team dropped to 2-2. Haymarket right-handed pitchers Casey Davenport (Ferrum) and Mark McCoy (Navy) combined for ten strikeouts and, along with a five-run ninth inning, doused any hopes of a Harrisonburg comeback. "Our pitching staff has been very consistent for us so far," Haymarket manager Harry Mayhew said. Besides breaking the Turks’ two-game winning streak, the Battlecats also broke .500 and moved into second place in the North Division. Center fielder Joe White (Richmond) hit a double and scored two runs for the ‘Cats, and designated hitter Nick Stavrakis (Rutgers) hit two singles and a double and scored two runs. First baseman Richy Read (Bridgewater) scored two runs on three hits. Haymarket 003 030 005 – 11 12 0 Harrisonburg 300 000 001 – 4 5 4 Davenport, McCoy (8) and Johnson; Dawson, Butts (7) and Bruce.
