Thomas Spitz: Week Five Turks POW
It was a slow week all around for the Turks who are on an absolute tear. A few scheduled off days coupled with a few rainouts and the Valley League All-Star Game gave the Turks six days off in a row with only one game for the week.
Despite going 0-for-5 at the plate in the lone contest, Thomas Spitz (Wingate) is this week’s Turks’ Player of the Week because of his performance in the VBL All-Star game to obtain MVP honors.
Spitz did go 0-for-5 in the Turks 13-7 thrashing of the Winchester Royals on Saturday but he collected a walk and RBI along the way.
Then on Sunday with the league’s and scout’s eyes on Veterans Memorial Park for the All-Star Game, Spitz continued to do what he has done all season for the Turks—get on base and set the table. In the first inning of the All-Star Game, Spitz singled and stole second to put himself into position to score two batters later when teammate Matt Rose singled in Spitz as the game’s first run.
Spitz would end up 1-for-2 with the steal and run scored. In the low-scoring affair which saw the South come out with a 2-1 victory North, Spitz’s numbers were good enough to claim All-Star Game MVP honors. It is the second year in a row that a Turk has gone home with MVP honors as Eric Kalbfleisch (UNCG) took home the hardware last season.
