HARRISONBURG, Va., June 18, 2015 – The Covington Lumberjacks came out swinging and never stopped on their way to an 11-3 blowout of the Harrisonburg Turks on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Park.

With two outs and a man on third, University of Miami’s Ryan Alvarez sent the offering from Jordan Meyer over the right field fence to give the Lumberjacks an early lead that they would never relinquish.

With the loss the Turks drop to 6-5 on the season while the Lumberjacks improve their record to 4-7.

Impressive on the mound for Covington was starting pitcher Reid Clements of Middle Tennessee State University. The right-hander scattered three hits over eight innings that included two walks and seven strikeouts.

On the offensive side, the Lumberjacks were lead by a 3-for-4 performance from Jonathan Corbitt that included a walk, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Besides Alvarez’s two RBI in the first, Carrera, Pangallo, Moorer and Gonzalez pitch in an RBI each to account for the rest of Covington’s scoring effort.

The Turks looked like they were going to keep it close after Covington took the lead in the first. Billings was hit by a pitch and made it all the way around the diamond, scoring on a chopper to third base by Jesse Baker.

It was a night where things just didn’t bounce the right way for the Turks but J.J. Bissell made the most of it, going 1-for-4 including a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, his first home run of the season.

Meyer got the start on the mound but struggled through three innings in which he gave up five runs on seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Tanner Shelton, Marc Stewart and James Ziemba battled hard in relief but were unable to cool the Lumberjacks’ hot bats.

It was a tough night for the home team at Veterans Memorial Park but they’ll have a chance to get things back on track when the New Market Rebels come to town tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
