CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., July 23, 2015 – It took 11 innings, but the Turks earned a 2-1 victory over the Charlottesville Tom Sox at C-Ville Weekly Ballpark on Thursday night.

Tripp Shelton and Shane Billings started the top of the 11th with back-to-back singles with the game tied at one apiece. Then with Steve McLean at the plate, both runners advanced on a passed ball. An error by the shortstop on the play allowed Shelton to cross the plate for the game-winning run. Tyler Brown went on the shut the door in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

With the win, the Turks move to 29-11 on the season and get one step closer to clinching the top seed in the playoffs. The Tom Sox fall to 17-22 and are now clinging to the fourth and final playoff spot in the VBL South division.

The game proved to be quite the pitchers duel between Harrisonburg’s James Ziemba and Charlottesville’s Matthew Eagle. Eagle didn’t allow a run in six innings while Ziemba didn’t allow an earned run, although an unearned run was scored while he was on the mound.

Charlottesville put their first and only run on the board in the 2nd thanks to a Colton Konvicka double that scored Caleb Robinson.

Robinson was the most successful Tom Sox player at the plate. The Western Carolina product finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Turks collected twice as many hits as the Tom Sox (8 to 4) with seven hitters accounting for at least one hit. Billings (2-for-4) was the only player on the team with a multi-hit game.

The Turks managed to tie the game at one on Kameron Esthay’s RBI double that pushed Jared Baker across the plate.

The game marks only the third time all season that a Turks game required extra innings.

The Turks return to the diamond tomorrow night when they travel to Waynesboro to take on the Generals at 7 p.m.
