PA Announcer Curt Dudley

Curt Dudley, who was inducted into the Valley League Hall of Fame in 2021, has been associated with the Harrisonburg Turks his entire professional career following graduation from Bridgewater College in 1983. That makes this summer his 41st summer with the organization.

A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Dudley first served as the official scorekeeper for the Turks a month after earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bridgewater. He began his public address duties in 1986 when he shared the microphone with Mike Schikman, another voice of the valley. He became the primary public address voice of the Turks one year later, and has held that role ever since. He also served the Valley League as its chief statistician for a decade, helping the organization transition to the digital age with computer scorekeeping and an internet presence.

Dudley has worked in collegiate athletics since his first weeks on the Bridgewater campus in the fall of 1979. While a B.C. student, he was the sports information director for the Eagles, and ultimately convinced college officials to hire him as the SID upon his graduation. It was not a full-time sports gig, however, as he split time as an admissions counselor. He moved full-time into the sports realm in the spring of 1988, becoming the SID for Coach Brad Babcock and the James Madison baseball Dukes five years after they had appeared in the College World Series. Dudley has worked with and covered every JMU sports program throughout the years as a reporter, publicist, historian and since 2007 the video all-sports voice of the Dukes.

Dudley retired from full-time status at JMU in 2021, but remains actively involved in the sports information and production industry. He teaches a broadcasting class at JMU and works closely every semester with a group of students who aspire to work in the profession. He remains the video play-by-play voice of football, men’s and women’s basketball and shares the roll for other sports. As JMU is a member of the Sun Belt Conference, those productions are aired on ESPN+.

Dudley blends his years of knowledge and contacts into multiple methods of distributing information, with the goal of keeping fans, current students, and former Dukes engaged with the university. Some of those methods are also employed in keeping Turks fans informed. For Turks, Valley League and other baseball notes, follow him on Twitter @CDudleyBaseball.

Dudley received the 2018 JMU Unseen Hero Award recognizing his work efforts and his dedication outside of the public spotlight.
