Generals Take Game 1

Waynesboro Hits Two Late Homers in Big Win over Harrisonburg

W: Connor Kaden (5-1)
L: Kyle Allen (2-1)

For the second straight year, Harrisonburg will face a do-or-die game 2 against the Generals. Waynesboro slinked out of Veterans Memorial Park with an 11-2 win on Sunday, putting the 2013 regular season champions on the brink of playoff elimination on the playoffs’ opening night.

With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the fourth, Harrisonburg (32-13) trailed 2-0 and was looking to get back in the game. Shortstop RJ Perucki took a walk from Waynesboro reliever Kyle Allen, and catcher Taylor Nichols hit a hard line drive that bounced off the pitcher’s glove, past the second baseman and inter the right center alley. Nichols reached second; Perucki scored from first. Third baseman Joe Napolitano drove Nichols in with a base hit on a 1-2 pitch, and the Turks were tied up at two apiece.

Unfortunately for Harrisonburg, Waynesboro (23-22) had plenty of offense left. Generals shortstop Tyler Bocock hit an RBI-single in the top of the fifth to score left fielder Corbin Lucas and retake the lead for good.

Lucas hit an RBI-single of his own one inning later in the top of the sixth; from there, the game got ugly, including a 2-run seventh for Waynesboro where the Generals registered no hits, but walked three times. Harrisonburg committed three of their four errors in the seventh as well.

Pinch hitter Quinn Griffith and catcher Ben Boykin both posted towering home runs late in the game to ice it.

The Generals got seven strong innings from starter David Spinosa and eventual game-winner Kyle Allen. The pair only combined for two strikeouts, but were effective in grounding the Turks into double plays and fly outs.

Connor Kaden takes his first loss of the season after allowing three earned runs through six innings. He struck out five and walked five.

Nichols finished 1 of 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Boykin finished 1 of 3 with an RBI, two scores, and two walks.

Waynesboro will host Harrisonburg in game 2 Monday night at 7pm.
