Wingate Pipeline Sends Duo to Turks

Wingate Head Coach Jeff Gregory is very familiar with the Harrisonburg Turks. Gregory spent his 2005 summer in Harrisonburg at the old legendary Veterans Memorial Park coaching the Turks. The young Gregory was an assistant at Wingate University until he was given the opportunity to advance and take the reins of the Bulldogs as head coach in 2010. Coach Gregory has sent a number of outstanding ballplayers to play for the Turks; Thomas Spitz and Shane Billings are two that pop to mind. Both Spitz and Billings excelled in Harrisonburg during their years and both now play in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league organization.

This season two more Bulldogs will travel to Harrisonburg and hopefully follow in the footsteps of their successful alumni. Standing at 5-8, 150 pounds, North Carolina native junior outfielder Ty Andrus will join his teammate, sophomore catcher Andrew Llewellyn. Both players are leading Wingate at the plate. Andrus is posting a .381 batting average starting all 32 games with 118 AB, with 27 runs, 45 hits, 11 doubles, 15 RBIs, 14 walks, and has stolen 17 of 21 bases. Llewellyn sits right behind Andrus on the stats page with a .341 batting average, starting in 22 of 24 games with 88 AB, with 12 runs, 30 hits, 4 doubles, 5 home runs, 22 RBI’s and 3 walks. Both players are solid defensive players posting .976% and .980% fielding percentage.
The Turks are excited to welcome this duo of Wingate Bulldogs to Harrisonburg.
