Turks Take Down the Bandits in Sunday’s Doubleheader

The Harrisonburg Turks continue to add to their highest win streak of the season — earning two more wins in Sunday’s doubleheader against the Woodstock River Bandits at Veterans Memorial Park. The wins move them to 18-10 this season and 10-6 at home.

Game one
The Turks won game one 7-5. Harrisonburg notched two unearned runs in the bottom of the first as T.J. Williams (Notre Dame) and Christian Ficca (Georgetown U) scored on Woodstock fielding errors. Harrisonburg put up three more runs in the bottom of the second with Casey Smith (James Madison), Sam Schner (Florida Tech) and Matthew Mamatas (GA Southwestern St) all adding to the lead.

The River Bandits racked up four runs in the top of the third as Renzo Gonzalez and Jack Spyke both hit two-RBI singles of their own.

The Turks stretched their lead back out in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Carlos Perez (Miami) and Ficca scoring on a stolen base.

Harrisonburg put the nail in the coffin in the bottom of the third as Woodstock wasn’t able to mount a comeback. Tomas Sanchez hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth — but that would be the last score of the game as the Turks won 7-5.

Game two
The Turks won game two 9-7. They started off with a bang — bringing four runs across in the bottom of the first. Mitch Farris (Wingate) slammed a solo home run — his third home run of the season. Seaver King (Wingate) scored on an RBI single from Ficca, while Ficca later scored on an RBI double from Jaylon Lee (EMU). Lee came across home plate on an RBI single from Brenden Vern.

Lee drove in another run in the bottom of the second, getting Brady Gumpf to score on a sacrifice fly. King earned his second run of the game off an RBI single from Williams while Rosario scored his first run of the game on an RBI single from Jake Stadler (Purdue).

Lee snagged his third RBI of the game in the bottom of the third as King scored on a sacrifice fly. 

The Turks were up 9-0 after three innings — but the River Bandits didn’t shy away.

Woodstock scored seven runs between the fifth and the sixth innings but the Turks did enough to hold on
and win 9-7. 

Andrew Williams (Georgetown U) earned his second win of the season, pitching four innings and throwing three strikeouts.
