On the Day Before

Turks players have been streaming into Harrisonburg from all over the country for most of this week, settling into the valley town that will shelter them for the majority of the summer.
Now that Opening Day is a mere 24 hours away, let’s take a look at the players that have arrived in town. (Find the full roster here.)
Righties:

Adam Cherry is a young Explorer who just finished his first collegiate season after redshirting in 2012. Cherry, who made 26 appearances in 2013, led the Winthrop bullpen with a 2.26 ERA.

Justin Camp is another young pitcher who just completed his first season on the mound as a Tiger. Camp shared his last outing of the 2013 season with Turks alumnus …

Connor Kaden is a steadily improving pitcher who brought his ERA down over six points to 3.56 in his sophomore season with Wake Forest.

Brett Morgan is a rising junior at Wingate. During his freshman year, he recorded 30 strikeouts in 31.1 innings, averaging nearly one strikeout per frame.

Lefties:

Garrett Ford won the Colonial Athletic Association’s Rookie of the Week honor twice in 2013, most recently in part for eight innings of shutout ball in a March 9 win over George Mason.

Jake Harper is an imposing 6’5″ leftie from Saint Joseph’s College. He worked for a 5-2 record in 8 starts (13 appearances) in 2013.

Sam Kmiec racked up 57 strikeouts in 2013, highlighted by a career-high 8 whiffs in 7.2 innings of work just a few weeks ago on May 4, 2013 against Charleston Southern.

Catchers:

Josh Clark is a rising junior at Wingate. He has started 45 games in each of his two seasons with the bulldogs, recording 13 multi-hit games in 2013.

Connor Lynch played two years with Georgia Tech. He was considered by many talent evaluators to be the best catching prospect of his class from the state of Georgia.

Infielders:

Mike Gilbert is a JuCo prospect from Mississippi Gulf Coast. He was named the NJCAA Division II player of the week in late February 2013.

Joe Napolitano started 10 games for Wake Forest (appeared in 23) in 2013 , after suffering a season-ending injury early in 2012.

Andy Perez, a utility man for Duke who’s played first, second, and shortstop, started all 53 games for the Blue Devils in 2013. He batted .316 last season.

Jalen Phillips is Andy Perez’ young teammate at Duke. During his high school career, he was a first team all-metro selection in Orlando in 2011.

Outfielders:

Jace Whitley is a Winthrop third baseman with a penchant for big games. Among his 42 starts in 2013 was a 3 of 5, 3-run performance at Radford on April 6.

Eric Kalbrleisch is a lean outfielder/pitcher combination man. He recorded one win and 4 RBI’s in his freshman season in 2012.

Thomas Spitz sprinted onto the scene for Wingate, hitting .298 his freshman year. In 2013, he upped his numbers to .351, twice posting a 4-RBI game.

Justin Korenblatt started 15 games as an Explorer in 2012, and flipped his fortunes for 51 starts in 2013.
